Jamie Oliver: showing us a new side
Jamie Oliver is back to take up the precious space between our TV shows with a new ad. And, unsurprisingly, he has stuck to the winning formula of making a complete and utter arse out of himself and yet still appealing to the majority of the population.
The trailer for Jamie’s American Road Trip - a six part series beginning on September 1 - features the man himself dressed as all six members of The Village People. The light-hearted ad obviously has a bottomless pit of gay innuendo (such as ‘bottomless pit’), all of which adds to Oliver’s cheeky, willing-to-laugh-at-himself image.
However, it’s not Jamie’s own posterior that earns the laughs. With a glorious sense of irony, the ‘Naked Chef’ required a body double for a crucial, buttock-revealing scene. Those titillated by the sight of Oliver’s bare behind will be disappointed to learn that the leather-clad bottom in fact belongs to Steve Clark, a part time actor from Sheffield.
Of course, cynics would be right to point out that everyone uses body doubles - actors, celebrities, even Piers Morgan.
But body shyness aside the Naked Chef’s antics throw up a different question - is he trying to put us off our food? After all the ad winkingly alludes to an unwanted cavity search (the customs officer snaps the glove into place and everything) and disturbingly implies that Oliver keeps a whisk down his trousers.
We hope TV ad schedulers make an effort to keep this one well away from Family Jamie’s outings for Sainsbury’s. Back in your box Adult Jamie!
