Celebrity Sell Out

The low-down on celebrity marketing news from Brand Republic

Ooh it's cold in here

Get out of the way I'm the star here

Well you can have all the money and fame in the world, but there comes a point when you have to say no. And in case of David Beckham that point appears to be being asked to appear next to an ‘undressed’ Angelina Jolie for hard cash.

Beckham was asked to be in the ads by Emporio Armani but says he wouldn’t do it because he’s married.

One can only imagine the relief on Brad Pitt’s part. He must be relieved the power of Branjelina will not be devalued by linking up with the Beckhams.

Marriage may be part of the reason behind Beckham’s decision, but it’s not the whole story. It’s impossible not to comment on this without wondering whether he was actually stopped by the Goldenballs equivalent of the PLC Board, ie her indoors.

Going back taking him on the publicity tour for that awful track she did with Dane Bowers, Posh Spice has managed a masterful job of piggybacking Beckham’s fame. Engineering an inclusion into the Armani ads was the latest reason in a long line to justify her celebrity existence.  So she must have been pretty hacked off when Armani made the startling discovery the ads actually might be improved by having Becks next to someone who is, ahem, attractive?

Beckham works up a sweat (for once)

And before the comments come in I’m not being sexist. The world is full of couples who are busily climbing on each others shoulders to get some press attention and some of them are actually men. Yes, I’m talking about you Peter Andre and you Coleen Rooney.

Having said that there is an alternative view. Maybe Becks is not so dim after all and there is method to the madness of posing with his scrawny missus. At the end of the day the good thing about being the piggybackee is that you’re in charge of where you’re going. He is the famous one and he knows it.

One doubts whether Jolie would ever need to climb on Beckham’s back. More like the other way methinks, which would be a far more interesting underwear ad than the one currently being contemplated by Armani.

  • It must be very difficult being the celebrity minnow in a relationship… you don’t have to watch too many episodes of Katie & Peter to realise where the centre of power is in that kind of relationship. Peter deals with it by being charmingly self-deprecating but he must go to bed at night wondering why he got himself involved in a relationship where he most certainly doesn’t wear the metaphorical trousers.

The dynamic seems to be very different with brand Beckham… he’s very famous, he earns all the big dollars but she seems to wield all the power. He must have soiled his Armani briefs at the very thought of posing semi-naked with Angelina (I know I would) but his wife must have poured cold water on his ardour and made it very clear to him that he wasn’t going to do it… and remain married. Perhaps it’s the thought of the stratospheric divorce settlement that brings him back into line every time!

I’m left with a vision of Mrs Beckham brandishing the marital equivalent of a P45 every time the poor fool even considers straying outside the “brand guidelines”. Talk about “repent at leisure”!

  • Stop having a go at David Beckham. He’s great and not pants at all and is an easy target for naughty websites that should know better, when what they should be doing is not whatever they are doing, so there.
What I’d really like to read here - I have plenty of time on my hands, am a bit bitter, oh, and sexually frustrated - what I’d really like to see here/read here/er write here… oh I’ve lost my chain of thought.
But essentially it boils down to this: what I’d really like to read here is what’s not here, so quite honestly I’m never going to be satisfied. So there.
Anyhow, naughty naughty Celeb Sellout. Let’s have some real insight for a change.
    Um…
    So there.

  • Part of the decision by Beckham to turn down the ad couldn’t just be simple hubris, could it? After all, the way this is reported, it would appear that Angelina had already agreed to do the ad before Beckham was even approached as I’m sure they wouldn’t dare to propose something involving her without her agreement at least in principle. As the ‘face’(!) of Armani, Becks probably got a bit miffed that he hadn’t been consulted first.
As for Posh being ’scrawny’, have you seen pictures of Angelina lately? They could both do well posing in an ad for Oxfam…

  • You’re are only partially right in your analysis Timbo, Angelina is skinny but at least she has her own boobs.
