Celebrity Sell Out

The low-down on celebrity marketing news from Brand Republic

March 5th, 2009 - Nikki Sandison

petaAnimal rights charity Peta has dispensed with actresses, supermodels and celebrities and, in a surprise move, hired strippers for its latest ‘I’d rather go naked’ campaign.

The girls of Rick’s Cabaret, apparently the only strip joint on the NASDAQ, pose topless for the charity with the strapline “We’d rather go topless than wear fur”.

Hang on a second, but surely this defeats the point of the long-running ‘I’d rather go naked’ campaign, which previously featured people you wouldn’t normally see nude, as opposed to strippers who, you know, do it for a living. Taking their clothes off is their job right?

Previous stars to have appeared in the ads include Lucy Davis from ‘The Office’, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Shirley Manson and numerous models including Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Cindy Crawford. However, Peta had to severe its relationship with Campbell when she wore a fur coat during a Milan fashion show after appearing in the ads. Let’s hope the strippers aren’t caught wearing fur thongs.

The new campaign was shot by celebrity photographer Andrea Blanch, who donated her time for the shoot.

Peta said that the strippers refuse to wear fur because they know that “the skins of beautiful animals are only worn by ugly people” and who needs clothes anyway when you can make more money naked?
