Eric counts his Renault sell-out cash

“If I’m doing it, it’s because I like it,” Cantona announces while strolling around the Renault Laguna. Liking what exactly Eric? Endorsing large family hatchbacks and making daft pronouncements you’re better remembered for? Or is he talking about le wonger, bringing in lots of cash for nothing harder than trading on the rapidly receding awareness of his name.

Of course selling out isn’t exactly new to Cantona. The man referred to by Manchester United’s prawn sandwich brigade as King Eric has been royally selling out since his retirement from the game. Cantona aimed for an acting career once he stopped performing for his old club’s predominantly London-based fans, however despite an oaklike performance in ‘Elizabeth’, many of his ‘roles’ have been in ads.

Among King Eric’s big performances have been numerous spots for Nike. This included that godawful ad around the last World Cup where he organised an ‘underground’ game featuring football’s most overpaid stars doing lots of over-synchronised tricks (what happened to proper tackles?). But he is not just a one-brand pony and other highlights include a nice sellout for the Irish Euromillions jackpot.

Enough is enough. Eric stop the ads, we all need to put food on the table but there are other ways of making some dosh. The solution is to return to your acting dreams and we know the perfect role for you, something that utilises what you are best remembered for as a player. Yes apparently Jackie Chan is in the hunt for a new co-star for an upcoming Kung-Fu movie.

  • Sorry I’ve nothing intelligent to say here - I only want to point out that Cantona’s an overrated pretentious git.

    There, that’s better!

  • That’s the worst load of arse I’ve ever read. Tired cliche after tired cliche. Rubbish
