This is definitely the case with regards to 'Strictly Come Dancing' and 'Question of Sport’s' Matt Dawson (did you know he was in the England World Cup winning rugby team? No neither did I). Anyhow the professional reality TV celeb (now a certified career path) has managed to sell himself out as the face of Young's. Well you might say, that is a good fit. He probably likes a pint and Young's is as good a beer as any, after all its more of an honest sell out if you’re flogging a product you actually use. But if you think that you’re wrong. But Dawson is actually the face of Young’s Seafood. Quite what is the tie in between rugby, dancing and a lukewarm 70s quiz show that persuaded Young's to bung in £1m for a campaign around Matty. Well according to the press release blurb it is something called Matt and Mitch's Big Fish on UKTV. A programme where Dawson and one of the million-odd celebrity chefs try out fish recipes. Still begs the same question, but this time to UKTV. Anyhow this is Young's statement on its reasons for hiring him. "We're delighted Matt has agreed to become the face of Young's. He's instantly recogniseable to most viewers, likeable, trusted and a decent cook to boot." Hmm one can imagine how much trouble they had persuading him, after all this is the man who ditched an England training session so he could appear on 'Question of Sport'. "Do you want some money for going on TV to advertise...." "Yes please." "…Young’s Seafood?" "Love it, thanks." Still we call this Celebrity Sellout but quite what he's sold is anyone's guess.

  • Give the guy a break - as a rugby player he wasn’t fortunate enough to be earn enough to be set up for life like those tarts you watch at WHUFC. He’s just trying to get along….

  • Why should we give him a break? If he’s playing rugby he obviously had a private education, in which case he should have picked a decent career. Otherwise learn to lie in your bed Dawson.

  • Don’t quite get why he’s being judged so harshly here, he seems like a nice guy and it’s not like he’s advertising anything offensive! I also understand he won celebrity Master Chief so there’s a tie in there too I would have thought.

  • [...] pity then sellout fodder such as Matt Dawson and Nell McAndrew who would have as much chance of getting in as you or I (maybe less). Still [...]

  • Now he can afford to get his ears Pinned Back, or was that part of the seafood deal?

Mick Connell on March 3, 2009
  • They’re not ears, they’re fins.
